Jihadism and the West

The western world has tolerated, if not outright supported jihadism for centuries. Great Britain and France protected the Ottoman Empire from the Russians during the nineteenth century. During the Greek campaign of Asia Minor, Italy, France, Great Britain, and the United States all supported Mustafa Kemal’s campaign which despite his later secularism, was fought as a jihad.

During the Yugoslav wars of the 1990’s, the United States and Europe tolerated and assisted jihadists who went to Bosnia and Kosovo to fight the Serbs. Previous to this in the 1980’s, the United States armed and trained jihadists to fight in the mountains of Afghanistan. Supporting jihadists has long been a western tradition.

During the war in Syria, the United States and Europe armed jihadist groups that sought to overthrow the secular government of Syria. This was after the 2003 invasion of Iraq which led first to a brutal intercommunal civil war before jihadists emerged to wage crimes against humanity and genocide. These atrocities preceded the formal establishment of the Islamic State which conquered one third of Iraq and Syria.

Arming jihadists has been a policy undertaken by both Republican and Democratic administrations in the United States and all these administrations deserve condemnation for pursuing these policies. Where the west did not directly arm jihadists, it created the conditions for jihadist territorial conquest and rule as in the case of Iraq. The Bush administration will be forever associated with Islamic State.

This brings us to the present. Turkey is gradually emerging as a jihadist state. Turkish leaders have bragged that many Syrian fighters would join Turkey in the event of a war between Greece and Turkey. It is obvious that those Syrians who would fight for Turkey are jihadists who received training and experience in the Syrian war that was backed by the administration of Barack Obama and Joseph Biden.

This is something that Greek Americans need to ponder before casting a vote for Democratic Candidate for President Joseph Biden. The Syrian war has also damaged Greece because all wars create refugees. The Syrian war flooded the Greek islands with refugees. In addition to the refugee crisis, Syrian jihadists supported by the Obama-Biden administration may be going to fight against Greece in the event of a war.

It was the Trump administration that cut off assistance to the Syrian jihadists after taking a realistic view of the situation. The Trump administration considered the Islamic State to be a bigger threat than the Assad government (correctly) and permitted the Russians to win the war for Damascus. The Trump administration not only contributed to the defeat of jihadism in Syria it also stopped the flow of refugees many of whom would have gone to Greece.

Greek critics complain that the Trump administration had gotten too close to the Erdogan government in Turkey. Fair enough, but hitherto the Trump administration has not bullied Greece into making concessions to Turkey. The Bush administration tried to force Cyprus into accepting the Annan Plan which would have rewarded the Turkish invasions and occupation.

The Clinton administration forced Greece to withdraw from the islet of Imia which the “Treaty of Peace with Italy” showed was Greek territory. The Obama administration did nothing for Greece and created the refugee crisis which flooded the Greek islands. The Carter administration lifted the arms embargo that Congress had imposed on Turkey after the twin Turkish invasions of Cyprus during the summer of 1974.

In addition, the Democratic Party is not an intellectual party. It is a party of Marxism and political correctness. The foreign policy of the Obama administration was based on utopianism rather than reality. In fairness, the Bush administration and the neocons likewise conducted a foreign policy based on utopianism and differed little from the Democrats foreign policy.

Greeks are in full agreement that Greece is a bastion of Orthodox Christianity. This means that Greece is a sister country of Serbia and Russia, Orthodox countries that were targeted by jihadists which in turn were armed and supported by the west. Syria is a historic bastion of Orthodoxy as the Patriarchate of Antioch is located in Damascus and presides over the last significant Orthodox population in the Middle East.

It was the Democratic administration of Bill Clinton that supported jihadism in Kosovo against the Serbs and the Democratic administration of Barack Obama that supported jihadism in Syria and made Russia the target of mass hatred throughout the west. Can the Democrats really be trusted to support Greece?

The Trump administration has proven to have a staunch record against jihadism as can be seen by its willingness to change foreign policy in furtherance of the decimation of Islamic State. With Turkey evolving further into a jihadist state, who would be the more likely to confront this threat? Donald Trump or Joe Biden?

Certainly, Greeks should be skeptical of Donald Trump as long as his administration is still friendly with the Erdogan regime. Greeks should be more skeptical of the Democrats. Who is more likely to end the traditional western backing of jiihadism?

Throughout the nineteenth century, support for the jihadists in the Ottoman Empire was motivated greatly by hatred toward the Russians. The Democrats have inherited that anti Russian hatred as well as their leaning in favor of jihadism as in Syria. The Trump administration has favored reconciliation with Russia. Perceptions of a Russian threat and the myth that Russia stole the 2016 elections for Trump could very well ensure that the Democrats support Turkey to undermine Russia.

We live in an age where nothing is certain and alliances are changing. All factors should be taken into consideration before Greeks throw their support behind a political candidate at this crucial time.

Trump’s Foreign Policy, Greece and Turkey

Editorial writers at both the New York Times and Bloomberg lamented the end of an era when the United States pressured Greece to make major concessions to Turkey. In fairness, these editorials did not express their opinions this way and they probably never proceeded to look at the details of how the Greek standoff with Turkey ended on January 31, 1996 over the islet of Imia. The Treaty of Paris of 1947 which gave the then Italian ruled Dodecanese islands to Greece included the Imia and other islets.

The Clinton administration represented by Undersecretary of State Richard Holbrooke brokered an agreement that led to the removal of the Greek flag and the abandonment of the islet by Greece. It was a capitulation by the Simitis government in Athens to the pressure of the United States. Thus far, the Trump administration has not emulated the traditional American pressure on Greece.

Sunday was the sixty fifth anniversary of the anti Greek pogroms in Constantinople. It should not be forgotten that neither the United States, Great Britain, or NATO condemned the Turkish government. On the contrary, the State Department under Secretary of State John Foster Dulles threatened to cut off aid to Greece if Athens maintained a firm position on the Turkish atrocities.

In 1965, Greek Ambassador to Washington Alexander Matsas was crudely insulted by President Lyndon Johnson who expressed outrage when the Ambassador asserted that the Greek Constitution would not permit Athens to give away a part of Greece (the island of Castellorizo) as part of a “settlement”on Cyprus. Johnson angrily declared,

“Fuck your parliament and your constitution. America is an elephant. Cyprus is a flea. Greece is a flea. If these two fellows continue itching the elephant, they may just get whacked by the elephant’s trunk, whacked good….If your Prime Minister gives me talk about democracy, parliament, and constitution, he, his parliament, and his constitution may not last very long.”

The Trump administration has not committed itself to Greece as it should, but neither has it threatened or bullied Greece as previous administrations have. The Trump campaign was in my opinion preferable to Hillary Clinton in 2016 owing to its “America First” platform that would have committed itself to an isolationist policy away from waging foreign wars and conducting traditional foreign policy that has been so detrimental to Greece and Cyprus in the past. Events that are playing out in the world and in America are changing quickly and this means that the stances and attitudes of America’s political parties could evolve.

As of this writing, it appears that a continuation of the Trump administration is preferable for Greece and Cyprus than the advent of a Biden administration. Again, things could change depending on how the Trump administration reacts to Turkish aggression against Greece and Cyprus. It is certainly true that the Trump administration capitulated to Turkey when it abandoned the Syrian Kurds and permitted Turkey to invade parts of Syria.

However, previous to this the Trump administration had taken a touch stance on Turkey on two occasions. The Trump administration refused to extradite Turkish exile Fetullah Gulen to Ankara despite the Erdogan government’s insistence. During the fight against ISIS, the Trump administration continued to arm the Syrian Kurds despite Turkish demands.

The Trump administration has a mixed record regarding Turkey. Still, the Trump administration has made changes to the traditional foreign policy conducted by both parties. The possibility of coming out strong against Turkey still exists, especially since the Turkish President is becoming increasingly irrational.

A case against the Democrats remains. The performance of the Democrats during the Imia affair are a perfect example. The Clinton administration recognized Skopje at the time as “Macedonia” despite Clinton’s promises in 1992 not to recognize Skopje. The Turkish murders of Cypriots Tasos Isaak and Solomos Solomou went completely unpunished by the Clinton administration.

The Obama administration in which Joe Biden served as Vice President involved itself in Syria. The failed policies in Syria resulted in refugees flooding the Greek islands at the apogee of the economic crisis. The Democrats have never been friendly to Greek interests.

Ultimately, it may not make a difference which party is in power in Washington. If the foreign policy apparatus decides Turkey is a threat, this could be enough to influence either Trump or Biden. The behavior of President Erdogan may also turn off whoever the President turns out to be.

One thing is certain. Turkey is an international menace. However, for the time being Trump appears to be the preferential candidate on Greek and Cypriot security issues.

The danger of appeasement, Turkey, and shifting alliances

The NATO alliance is now seeking to “mediate” the crisis caused by Turkish aggression against Greece in the Mediterranean sea. Athens should look upon NATO plans with great skepticism and suspicion. In contrast to the European Union, and in contrast to the support for Greece from individual countries such as France and Italy, NATO has expressed no hitherto support for Greece.

The Mitsotakis government has handled this crisis well. After Turkey signed an agreement with Libya in effect partitioning the Mediterranean between them, Athens signed the EEZ agreement with Egypt. In addition to France and Italy, it appears the United Arab Emirates and even Saudi Arabia are adopting stances favorable to the Greek position.

Athens knows full well that the Erdogan government has put forward a claim on the Greek islands and has openly demanded a revision of the Treaty of Lausanne. Turkish claims to the continental shelf located under these islands and drilling for oil near them is an act of blatant aggression. NATO’s refusal to intervene until now is proof that NATO cannot be trusted.

It should not be forgotten that on January 31, 1996 Turkey claimed the Greek islet of Imia. Through the mediation of Undersecretary of State Richard Holbrooke the Greek flag was removed from the islet although the Treaty of Paris of 1947 clearly showed that Imia belonged to Greece. A New York Times editorial last weekend lamented the failure of the United States to “resolve” the present “crisis” in accordance with past “mediation” efforts such as that of January 31, 1996.

Athens would be making a great mistake if it agreed to anything that would concede to Turkey any of its rights. In all likelihood, the General Secretary of NATO will probably attempt to impose on Greece another “Imia” type solution. Greece should be ready for this and should reject any agreement that would compromise Greece’s rights.

The German newspaper, “Die Welt” reported that Turkish President Erdogan ordered the military to either sink a Greek ship or to shoot down a Greek helicopter without causing the loss of life! The Turkish Generals reportedly refused to follow the President’s orders. If this happens to be true it indicates that many in Turkey are skeptical of the Erdogan governments pro war policies and that divisions may exist in the formulation of policy.

Unlike in the past when Turkish aggression was manifest against Greece, Turkey has many more problems to cope with. In the past, Turkey’s problems were limited to the Kurdish question. Today, Turkey has many more problems that have to with the Kurds of Syria as well as their own Kurds. In addition, they have tensions with Syria as a result of the victory of the Syrian government in that countries civil war.

Turkey’s allies in the effort to overthrow the Asaad regime included Saudi Arabia. Now it appears that tensions exist between Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Turkey’s effort to emerge as the leader of the Sunni Muslim world has failed spectacularly.

The Greek City Times has reported that Russia has protested Greek media coverage asserting that Moscow supports Turkey in the present crisis, an accusation Moscow rejects. While the Russian ties with Turkey at this point should be of serious concern, it is a dangerous mistake for Greece to join the western demonization of Russia. It should be remembered that alliances throughout the crisis in Syria and the Middle East have shifted.

The Turkish government ordered the downing of a Russian plane in 2015 which nearly provoked a war with Russia and Turkey. Greeks need to remember that Athens rejected overtures from the Russians during this time and obeyed the dictates of the west. A Greek alliance with America and Europe against Turkey is welcome, Athens has to be careful to avoid participating in any actions against Russia and Iran which American officials seem to be attempting to drag Greece into.

American Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt has praised Greece for keeping Russian influence out. The Greeks need to be concerned only about the Russian support for Turkey, and not the non existent efforts of Russian to establish influence in Greece. It should be remembered that Patriarch Bartholomew with the full backing of Washington along with some compromised Bishops from the Church of Greece have supported the persecution of Moscow’s Orthodox Church in Ukraine at the request of the State Department.

In 2021, Greece will commemorate two anniversaries. Greeks will celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the Greek War of Independence. Less likely to be highlighted next August will be the nine hundred and fifty year anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert where the Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantine armies and seized a huge portion of Anatolia. The Greek world has been at the mercy of the Turk ever since.

Greek national ambitions should be aimed at eradicating the Turkish threat. The Mitsotakis government has presently put Turkey at the forefront of its foreign policy. For this, the Prime Minister and his foreign policy and defense advisors deserve praise. It has been decades since Greece had a government that was based on Greek nationalism rather than the internationalist agenda that was at the forefront of the agenda of the leftist Socialist Party.

Greece’s foreign policy must remained focused on Turkey. Its foreign relations with America, Europe, Russia, Israel, and the Arab world should depend on the status of their relationship with Turkey. Greece should strengthen its ties with those countries that are hostile to Turkey. Considering Russia’s ties with Turkey, it is reasonable for Athens to cool its relationship with Moscow.

But that relationship should be cooled on the basis only of Russian support for Turkey, and not because America and Europe do not like Russia. Greece needs to be careful and to select its fights very carefully and selectively. It should commit itself only to an alliance that is anti Turkish.

It is entirely possible that the Turkish government could succeed in following the example of the Young Turks during the First World War and succeed in alienating both the West and Russia. This would be the ideal. Turkey today is evolving into a Jihadist state that threatens everybody.

Before the Greek media joins in the demonization of Russia it should take into consideration the downing of the Russian plane in 2015, and the assassination of the Russian Ambassador by a Turkish Jihadist. In the past decade, Erdogan’s Turkey has nearly started a war with Israel (the flotilla incident), Russia, and the United States (in Syria). While it is disappointing that none of these three countries maintained a principled stance against Turkish aggression, precedents have been set for a future Turkish provocation against one or all of the above.

The present Turkish President has demonstrated an inability to engage rationally with other countries. Sooner or later, he is going to provoke a conflict with one of the above governments that will lead to serious repercussions for Ankara. In the meantime, Greece should maintain its principled policies and reject any attempt by NATO to force Athens to surrender its rights.

The Erdogan leadership survived coup attempts in 2004 and 2016. In all likelihood it can only be removed by power from without. As unlikely as it seems now, should Ankara continue to provoke and to meddle, the prospect of a foreign intervention in Turkey cannot be ruled out over the long term.

Hagia Sophia Diaries 17

The Turkish government now requires all female visitors to Hagia Sophia to wear headscarves and to cover their legs. The government had given assurance that visitors could visit Hagia Sophia for free, but anyone who is not properly dressed must now pay to purchase coverings in order to enter Hagia Sophia. Throughout much of the Muslim world their continues to be praise for the Turkish government for its actions in converting Hagia Sophia.

The support of Palestinian groups for the conversion of Hagia Sophia and Turkey should be seen by Greeks as a signal that alliances are changing. Greece and Cyprus have been establishing better relations with Israel over the last decade or so, and this must continue. Greece must view any and all governments that support the conversion of Hagia Sophia in an unfriendly light.

The Greek Foreign Ministry should call diplomats from those countries to raise a formal protest over their public support for the conversion of Hagia Sophia. The Ministry of Culture should also begin putting pressure on UNESCO to take a more aggressive stance on the issue. UNESCO sent one letter of protest to the Turkish government and went silent again.

The further conversion of the the Church of the savior at Chora indicates that the conversion of Church-Museums in Turkey may not stop. The Greek world, the international media, and cultural institutions waited much too long to respond to these Turkish provocations. This is a process that began in 2013 with the conversion of the Church-Museum of Hagia Sophia in Trebizond.

As far as the international reaction is concerned, better late than never. However, the danger now is that the media and cultural organizations will simply accept what Turkey has done and will go back to sleep. There needs to be a continued reaction of protests and boycotts of Turkey at all levels.

Greece should also make it clear to any country that has praised the actions of the Erdogan government that this will lead to a deterioration of relations with that particular country. Hagia Sophia can never be considered a Mosque as its Christian origins are beyond dispute. The Erdogan government’s conversion of all Churches since 2013 constitute acts of aggression.

Those governments which supported these acts of provocation display an unfriendly attitude toward Greece. The Greek Foreign Ministry should convey this stance to the diplomats of those countries that are stationed in Athens.

Erdogan’s genocidal ambitions

Turkish President Erdogan has criticized the Republican People’s Party for “losing” the Greek islands that are off the Turkish coast. The Republican People’s Party was the party that was founded by the murderous dictator and general Mustafa Kemal Pasha. Kemal was responsible for conquering territories that had been lost to the Ottoman Empire in 1918 including Constantinople (occupied by the western powers), Smyrna and other lands liberated by Greece, and independent Armenia.

The forcible reconquest of all these territories was carried out through genocide and ethnic cleansing. Only with the deliberate murder and forcible expulsions of the native Christian populations was it possible for Kemal to reclaim these lands for the successor state to the Ottoman Empire that he subsequently created. At the Lausanne Conference of 1923, Kemal practically dictated the terms of “peace” between his own movement and Greece.

Despite Kemal’s conquests of all these territories, Turks like Erdogan remain unsatisfied. Erdogan openly covets the Greek islands that are near the Asia minor coast despite the fact that the populations of these islands are overwhelmingly Greek and have been Hellenic for many centuries before the Turks ever showed up. Turkey today could only take these islands through genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Erdogan would not be the only Turkish leader to advocate genocide and territorial expansionism at the expense of Greece. Kemal of course is the most notorious practitioner of genocide (along with the Young Turks who preceded him). Another leader of the Republican People’s Party, Bulent Ecevit ordered the invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974 which led to the ethnic cleansing of 200,000 Greek Cypriots. For Erdogan, Kemal and Ecevit were much too soft on the Greeks.

It is very clear that Erdogan is a psychopath and an extreme narcissist. Greece and Cyprus need to be fully prepared to defend themselves and their native populations from Turkish aggression. Fortunately, Prime Minister Mitsotakis seems to be prepared for the difficult road ahead. For the first time in decades, Greece has a government that is competent in both foreign affairs and in domestic affairs.

The successful handing of the coronavirus epidemic in Greece has won Greece good will and the Prime Minister has a good reputation with a good deal of political and diplomatic sophistication (in contrast to his predecessor). Mitsotakis has been standing up to Turkey over the matter of the continental shelf and has won the backing of Egypt, Israel, the European Union, and the United States (although it is unclear how far American support will go). Mitsotakis could become another Venizelos if he continues to succeed in building up international support against Erdogan’s genocidal ambitions.

Hagia Sophia Diaries 15

The Turkish government lied to the world when it declared that the mosaics of Hagia Sophia would be protected. The iconography is covered up when Islamic prayers are not being said. The upper gallery of Hagia Sophia has also been closed to tourists.

This is very likely a first step to permanently cover or erase the iconography. The flags of the Taliban and Hamas have both been raised inside Hagia Sophia. The most extreme and fanatical elements in the Muslim world are behind Erdogan. Erdogan has lost the support of much of the native Turkish population but he has made Islamists throughout the world very happy.

After writing one letter to Turkish officials, UNESCO has gone back to sleep and is ignoring the continued desecration of Hagia Sophia. The international media is continuing to write about Hagia Sophia but the protests from the academics have gone silent once again. All the worst fears about Hagia Sophia are being realized.

The covering up of Christian iconography can be construed as disrespectful, if not blasphemous. Erdogan has failed his own citizens by causing the further spread of coronavirus but he is a hero for the world’s Jihadists. When it comes to the future of the mosaics of Hagia Sophia the Jihadists are likely to have more influence on Erdogan than Turkish critics of the conversion of Hagia Sophia or foreign governments who have criticized the conversion.

Hagia Sophia Diaries 14

The blowback from Turkish President Erdogan’s decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a Mosque continues. Articles and commentaries continue to be published daily throughout the world criticizing Erdogan’s decision. Many of the commentaries are written by Turkish dissidents who are appalled by collapse of Turkish secularism and the growing authoritarianism of the Erdogan government in recent years.

The conversion of Hagia Sophia into a Mosque was supposed to be a symbol of neo-Ottoman triumphalism. The Erdogan government was supposed to celebrate the victory over the secularism of Mustafa Kemal as well as the conquest of the capital of Eastern Christianity by the Ottoman Turks. It is now known that a Muslim cleric who lead prayers in Hagia Sophia died of a heart attack. Furthermore, three thousand people in or outside Hagia Sophia were infected with the corona virus.

The conversion of Hagia Sophia was an initial public relations disaster. The health threat as a result of the huge gathering at the site is an even bigger disaster. President Erdogan himself can be blamed for spreading the corona virus among his own population. This is an act of blatant incompetence and moral failure.

There has been speculation that the whole Hagia Sophia affair was intended to bolster Erdogan’s popularity. If so, this attempt was a spectacular failure. The Turkish population will not be thrilled with the fact that a dangerous disease has spread because of the narcissism and arrogance of the President.

This could be a significant moment for Turkey. Hagia Sophia could become the cause of the downfall of the Erdogan regime. That is very unlikely, but possible. Leaving aside the Turkish President causing his own citizens to become infected with corona virus, the regime had been planting the seeds of its own destruction by interfering with Hagia Sophia.

The Erdogan regime has expansionist tendencies. Ankara tried (and failed) to expand its influence in Syria. It has more successfully established influence in Libya. The Hagia Sophia debacle has had very minimal benefits (that have been heavily outweighed by the international backlash) in terms of establishing closer Turkish ties with Iran, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Erdogan has territorial claims on the Greek islands. The international climate was already critical of Turkish influence and expansionism even before the Hagia Sophia debacle. Erdogan’s stunt succeeded in bringing unwanted attention to Turkey. As such, any Turkish expansionism has been preceded by an awakening throughout the world that Turkey is a menace and a danger.

Theological interpretations aside, Hagia Sophia has become a curse for the Turkish leadership. The political and diplomatic fallout has led to maximum media coverage throughout the world. Attention has been brought down on both Turkish expansionistic activity and the domestic abuse of political dissidents and minorities.

Whatever happens in Turkey, the debacle at Hagia Sophia will have seriously damaged the Erdogan regime.

Hagia Sophia Diaries 13

Greece and Egypt recently signed an EEZ agreement which strengthens Greece against Turkey. Turkey states that the agreement between Greece and Egypt is non existent. Greek diplomacy has come a long way under Prime Minister Mitsotakis which is standing up to Turkish aggression.

More welcome news is that the government of Egypt has condemned the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a Mosque. Furthermore, the Egyptian Prime Minister visited the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Catherine at Sinai and was awarded with the Order of Saint Catherine. The Egyptian government announced that it was going to spend the equivalent of $2.5 million for the restoration of the Monastery.

A few years ago, the Monastery came under attack from Islamic State militants. Four Egyptian police officers were killed and one was injured in the line of duty in protecting Christian Monks from the Islamic State. The attitude of Egypt toward the Monastery of Saint Catherine is one that is truly enlightened and Greek Orthodox Christians everywhere should be grateful.

The Monastery itself was built under the auspices of Saint Justinian the Great of Constantinople who also presided over the construction of Hagia Sophia. Saint Catherine’s was originally named for the transfiguration of Christ but in later centuries was renamed after the relics of Saint Catherine were discovered at that site.

The Monastery is also built on the site of the burning bush through which God spoke to Moses. It is one of the holiest places in Christendom. The Monastery grounds also include a Mosque so that Muslims may also pray. Sinai is also holy to Muslims and Jews who also regard Moses as a great prophet.

The Coptic Christians of Egypt have long been persecuted in Egypt by fanatical Islamists. Hopefully, the Egyptian government’s fight against Islamic terrorists will secure the rights and the future of the Coptic Christians in Egypt.

In other news, the Turkish cleric who led prayers in Hagia Sophia died of a heart attack.

On Fascism and Anti Fascism

Fascism was introduced by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini who seized power through a march on Rome in 1922. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco who ruled from 1939 following his victory in the Spanish Civil War until his death in 1975 also presided over a fascist regime. National Socialism (Nazism) is frequently confused with fascism and while there are many similarities between them, the latter ideology is distinguished by the additional doctrines of racism, paganism, and occultism.

Fascist doctrine as espoused by Mussolini emphasized statism (the importance of the authority of the state over the citizen). Mussolini further opposed classical liberalism which is the basis for modern democracies such as the United States. Contempt for classical liberalism is something that the alleged “anti fascists” of today happen to share.

In his “doctrine of fascism” Mussolini wrote that fascism is “all embracing”; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist.” In addition, “fascism is totalitarian”. This is an elaboration on statism and the concept that the “state creates the nation”.

Further characteristics that can be attributed to fascism include anti-communism, activism and action on the part of its loyal adherents, a favorable attitude toward war, and opposition to majority rule. Nazism shares all these traits while throwing in anti semitism and racial hatred. While it is true that Mussolini’s regime is recognized as the first fascist state, in actuality it was not.

Several years ago, historian Stefan Ihrig published a book entitled “Ataturk in the Nazi imagination.” The author of the work spent much time researching the archives of old Nazi party newspapers during the period of 1919-1922. The author found praise for the Turkish racist and dictator Mustafa Kemal (later called Ataturk) by the Nazis. The Nazi newspapers praised the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Armenians and Greeks and viewed the mass murders as a model for Germany’s Jewish population.

The Italians may have invented the term “fascism” but the concepts and principals predated Mussolini. Ihrig writes in his book that Mussolini and Hitler viewed Kemal as a model. In addition, the principals that Kemal imposed on Turkey following the extermination of the Greeks and Armenians were authoritarianism, statism, secularism, the cult of personality around the leader. In addition there are certain similarities between Kemalism and Nazism with both the Turks and Germans espousing mythical ideas of racial superiority.

In the post World War II era, right wing extremism continued to exist but no such movement was willing to adopt the term “fascism” as that term became associated mostly with Hitler. Extreme right wing dictatorships existed in South America which could very clearly be categorized as fascist not only because of the brutal methods and ideas they shared with the regimes of Italy and Germany, but because they also became havens for Nazi war criminals. Other extreme right wing regimes could be classified as fascist such as that of Augosto Pinochet in Chile, Idi Amin in Uganda, and the Colonels in Greece.

In some cases, historical writers will assert that a right wing dictatorship is not necessarily a fascist government. Christopher Montgomery Woodhouse who wrote many books on modern Greek history stated in his book, “The rise and fall of the Greek Colonels” that the Colonels regime in Athens was not fascist. This is true from a technical point of view and certainly one historical factor in the success of fascist movements of the 1920’s and 1930’s that of mass support was something the Colonels did not enjoy. Even so, from an ideological standpoint the Colonels modeled themselves on the Metaxas dictatorship of 1936-1940 which was a fascist regime and which adopted outward symbols of Italian fascism and German national socialism such as the stiff arm salute.

This brings up now the activities and agenda of the organization known as “antifa” which considers itself to be “anti fascist”. Presumably, they consider the Trump administration to be fascist. Admittedly, President Trump has done himself no favors with his inability to articulate what he means. He spoke very badly after the events at Charlottesville in 2017 and his misstatements have haunted him ever since.

In any case, the idea that “antifa” is opposing fascism is preposterous. America is a liberal democracy and if the administration were fascist groups such as this would feel it. America has not become authoritarian or evolved into a totalitarian state. Furthermore, returning to the Turkish example. Throughout the twentieth century the Turkish military served to foster the cult of Mustafa Kemal and maintained influence over civilian governments. Because of a history of coups and interventions, the term the “deep state” came into use which is an excellent description for the Turkish version of fascism.

The use of the term “deep state” has come to America and is used to describe the establishment in Washington which has been trying to undermine President Trump since his inauguration. One cannot accuse a President who has been repeatedly undermined and even nearly impeached as being a “fascist” when it his democratic opponents who are in fact trying to overturn the elections that made President Trump President.

Furthermore, fascists do not get elected. Mussolini led a march on Rome in 1922. Hitler was appointed chancellor by President Von Hindenburg to preside over a coalition government. Mustafa Kemal seized power as leader of the Turkish military after slaughtering the Christians. Pinochet in Chile and other dictators came to power through military coups and assassinations.

Furthermore, fascists cannot boast about preventing genocide. The Trump administration was successful in its policies in Iraq and Syria and contributed to the destruction of the Islamic State which had perpetrated genocide against Yazidis, Christians, and Shiite Muslims. Furthermore, the Trump administration has tried to reform American foreign policy by ending pointless wars such as those in Iraq which led to civil war and genocide. Mussolini endorsed the idea of war in his “doctrine of fascism”. Hitler violated every agreement he ever made with foreign leaders and conquered all of Europe.

President Trump has sought reconciliation with Russia. For his moderation in international affairs, his critics have questioned the legitimacy of the elections. Mussolini’s ideas on fascism express opposition to the very concept of majority rule. In this regard, President Trump’s critics who are attempting to overturn the outcome of the 2016 Presidential elections seem to agree with Mussolini’s disdain for majority rule.

The impeachment of Donald Trump was one of the high points of absurdity. President Trump was almost impeached for seeking evidence of misconduct on the part of former Vice President Joe Biden from the Ukrainians who would be in possession of the alleged evidence of wrong doing by Biden. If anything, President Trump is a reformer more than anything else.

An example of a fascist state is that of Croatia which declared independence from the former Yugoslavia. That government under the leadership of the late Franjo Tudjman embraced the symbols of the Ustashe movement. The Ustashe was the pro Nazi movement that ruled the Nazi puppet state of Croatia during the second world war. The Ustashe slaughtered over eight hundred thousand Orthodox Christians Serbs.

During the 1990’s, the Clinton administration armed and abetted the Croatian offensives in the region of Krajina which led to the ethnic cleansing of over 200,000 Serbs. In Ukraine in 2014, the Obama-Biden administration overlooked the pro Nazi militias that the Russians fought against. Speaking of fascism?

Finally, in addition to maligning the President, so called “anti fascists” have maligned the Russians. Hillary Clinton compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to Hitler. Never mind that Putin lost an older brother and two Uncles during the Nazi siege of Leningrad.

American foreign policy during the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations pursued a staunchly anti Russian policy that became increasingly more radical. The Clinton administration began by supporting the expansion of NATO. NATO expanded further and further until it tried to expand up to the Russian border under the Obama administration by including Ukraine as a member of the alliance.

The anti Russian foreign foreign policy that the Democrats have pursued and will likely pursue in the future is one that Hitler himself would have approved of. The Democrats (and in all fairness the pre Trump Republicans) emulated Hitler’s policies by pursuing the destruction of Yugoslavia (another country Hitler hated and destroyed).

The fake anti-fascist groups need to go back to school and study history. Then they will learn what fascism really is. There is an interesting new biography of the late Greek journalist Elias Demetracopoulos that has just been released called “The Greek connection” about the military dictatorship in Greece and the Republican Party during the Nixon administration.

Mr. Demetracopoulos was a brave journalist who risked his life to oppose the Colonels regime in Greece. That is an example of being an anti-fascist. Not burning Bibles, the American flag, and smashing statues and public and private property.

Hagia Sophia Diaries 12

The Iranian government has praised the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a Mosque. Likewise, the Palestinian Hamas has praised the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a Mosque, as has Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In addition, it has been asserted that a pro Taliban group in Turkey raised the flag of the Taliban in Hagia Sophia. The Taliban of course being the psychopathic regime in Afghanistan that imposed a policy of complete repression on women, that outlawed books, music, films, and sports. The Taliban was also the regime that hosted Al Qaida.

There are some disputes as to whether this was the flag of the Taliban. Some have asserted that this was actually the flag of the jihadist groups affiliated with Al Qaida in Syria. In any case, the flag was that of a fanatical jihadist movement complicit in acts of terrorism.

As difficult as it may be for Orthodox Greeks to see Hagia Sophia as a Mosque, there is no question that there are political benefits for Greece and Cyprus. The Erdogan regime continues to associate itself with the most fanatical and extreme jihadists. The display of a flag associated with terrorists (it does not make a difference which terrorists ) is further evidence that Turkey is becoming the center of international jihadism.

There are going to be negative political and diplomatic repercussions for the disturbance to Hagia Sophia. We are beginning to see those repercussions by the international show of support for the Erdogan regime by Jihadists around the world. Turkey is now the Jihadist state that is at least geographically part of Europe.

This represents a serious problem for Europe, America, and Russia. Greek diplomacy must focus on and highlight this threat.
