Sanctioning Turkey

https://www.thenationalherald.com/eu-mulls-sanctions-for-turkey-opening-varosha-resort-on-cyprus/

The European Union is apparently considering sanctions on Turkey in response to the opening of the town of Varosha in the occupied territories of Cyprus. Such a development would be victory and a major step forward for Greece and Cyprus. Whether the EU is serious on the other hand remains to be seen.

The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said sanctions are being considered. This would be crucial because it would directly impose sanctions on Turkey for its aggressive stances toward the Hellenic world. The EU has previously imposed sanctions on Turkey over the purchase of a Russian defense system. At the insistence of Germany, Europe has refused to sanction Turkey over its aggressive and expansionist claims on Greek and Cypriot territory.

Sanctions over Varosha will be a major victory in Hellenic diplomacy. The question remains whether the EU will actually impose sanctions. Now is the time for Athens to pay close attention to which European states will oppose or support the aforementioned sanctions. Any opposition to sanctioning Turkey on the matter of Varosha collectively by the EU itself or by individual EU members should be viewed as hostile and unfriendly actions by Greece and Cyprus.

Any European elements that do not stand with Greece and Cyprus at this date are not worth consideration as long time allies by either Athens or Nicosia.

Halki

Patriarch Bartholomew is making an appeal to the Turkish government to open the school of Halki which was closed fifty years ago. This is a gesture worthy of support. The closure of Halki constitutes an act of state sponsored discrimination and the controversies Patriarch Bartholomew presides over elsewhere does not relinquish the Turkish government from its responsibilities to respect religious freedom.

Patriarch Bartholomew would have served the Patriarchate better had he concentrated on the problems of his Church in Turkey. Had the Patriarchate not caused division over Ukraine and had the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in America been in better condition, the fight for Halki (and Hagia Sophia) might have been waged with greater support and sympathy. The Patriarchate is right to accuse Turkey of violating religious freedom but the reality is that the Church of Constantinople is an accomplice to the violation of religious freedom of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Ukrainian authorities.

As has been pointed out previously on this blog, the Patriarch and the Archbishop of America have made a major error in aligning with the American foreign policy establishment. Whatever cooperation exists between Constantinople and Washington has not paid off for the Patriarchate. Hagia Sophia has been converted into a Mosque and Halki remains closed.

Patriarch Bartholomew’s American friends have not come to the rescue. It would appear that Washington has no interest in the Patriarchate beyond a common fight against Russia. This means Washington will do nothing on the Halki issue.

The Patriarchate should be more concerned about its destroyed image in Orthodoxy than in maintaining a fraudulent alliance with Washington. If the Patriarchate wants to survive in Constantinople, it must be restored as a bastion of Orthodoxy. This means disavowing its mad Ukrainian venture and reconciling with the Russian Church.

Disservice To the Church Of Constantinople

One reason why I was inspired to start this blog was to establish a forum to express dissent for the Church of Constantinople’s actions in Ukraine and throughout Orthodoxy. It is a tragedy that the voices speaking in an official capacity for Constantinople are doing so by ignoring harsh truths regarding that Church’s role in fomenting the schism in Orthodoxy and promoting oppression against Orthodox Ukrainians. His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia has said that Orthodoxy could not exist without the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Such exaggerated boasts do not serve the Ecumenical Patriarchate well. It is fact that for three hundred and fifty years the Church did not have an Ecumenical Patriarchate. Furthermore, when the Patriarchate of Constantinople was formally established by the fathers of the Second Ecumenical Council in 381 AD it was second in honor after Rome. In addition, the Patriarchate was established by the authority of the universal Church. It did not establish itself.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate has no right to claim authority over the local Orthodox Churches. Contrary to the Archbishop’s assertion the Orthodox Church can and will function without the Ecumenical Patriarchate as it did when Rome fell into heresy. The Archbishop forgets that Patriarchs once espoused heresies such as Nestorianism (named after the Patriarch who reigned between 427 and 431 AD), Iconoclasm, and supported the Council Of Florence in 1439.

It is a provable fact that the Patriarch is not infallible and has clearly lost his way. The Patriarchate of Constantinople refuses to convene a council or to even discuss the Ukrainian issue. The Archbishop urged the faithful of Australia to be faithful to the Patriarchate and to show their love. Some of us are attempting to show our love by pointing out that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is wrong for espousing a new ecclesiology that is foreign to Orthodoxy.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate is being devoured by those who are indulging and supporting the errors of Patriarch Bartholomew. Those who wish to serve the Ecumenical Patriarchate do so by upholding and espousing the traditional Orthodox faith being upheld by the universal Church of which Constantinople is only one part of. The Church of Constantinople is being damaged the longer it refuses to submit to the demands of the universal Church and fails to comply with the process of conciliarity.

The Patriarch, the Archbishop, And The New Crusaders

Theodore Karakostas

With the anti Russian rhetoric heating up again in Washington it is impossible not to comment on the involvement of Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Elpidophoros with the American foreign policy establishment. The schism in Orthodoxy began when Patriarch Bartholomew violated canon law and proceeded to “grant” autocephaly to a schismatic sect in Ukraine despite the fact that this territory belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church. Political interests based on anti Russian hysteria made Constantinople’s actions possible.

The unpleasant reality here is that the Patriarch and the Archbishop are blinded by their aspirations for power by attempting to convert the Patriarchate into a source of complete authority over Orthodoxy at the expense of traditional Orthodox ecclesiology. Authority in the Orthodox Church is held by Christ who is the true leader of the Church. Under the auspices of the holy spirit, decisions are made by an ecumenical council in which all the Orthodox Churches participate.

In 2013, then Metropolitan Elpidophoros gained notoriety in Orthodoxy when he pronounced that the Ecumenical Patriarch is “first without equals” among Orthodox Patriarchs and primates. In truth the Ecumenical Patriarch is considered to be “first among equals” with a “primacy of honour” and not authority. In 2018, the theories of Archbishop Elpidophoros were put into practice when the Patriachate declared against all evidence that Ukraine belonged to Constantinople.

A formal alliance between the Patriarchate and the American foreign policy establishment was formally sealed at this time. The unifying factor in this alliance was a common dislike of the Russians. Only the Russian Church is strong enough to resist Patriarch Bartholomew’s aggressive and anti Orthodox ecclesiology. To this end Washington considers the Patriarchate to be of considerable value.

This is important because Washington only values the Patriarchate for the purpose of hurting the Russian Church. It does NOT support the Patriarchate for reasons of religious freedom. The Patriarch and the Archbishop have badly misinterpreted the intentions of the American foreign policy establishment.

During his American visit, Patriarch Bartholomew referred to the Russian Church’s decision to break communion with Constantinople. He uttered the infamous “skasila mou” remark and his audience responded with laughter as if the threat of a permanent schism in Orthodoxy was a cause for amusement rather than a tragedy. It has been forgotten that the American foreign policy establishment ignored the ethnic cleansing of Orthodox Greeks from Constantinople by the Turks during the 1950’s and 1960’s which is why the Patriarchate’s existence is threatened.

The decisions of the Patriarchate and the Archdiocese of New York have been catastrophic. Much publicity has surrounded the scandals at the Archdiocese and the Saint Nicholas Shrine but surprisingly little has been written about the blatant politicization of both Patriarchate and Archdiocese by the secular interests of the State Department. The political activities of both Patriarch and Archbishop have not been confined to their own ecclesiastical territory.

The Patriarchate and the Archdiocese have done much harm to the once independent and honorable Church of Greece. Patriarch Bartholomew with the backing of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and “Ambassador” Geoffrey Pyatt pushed the Church of Greece under the cowardly Archbishop Ieronymos to recognize the fake “church” in Ukraine that Constantinople established with the backing of the Americans.

The influence that the spiritually unhealthy Archdiocese and Patriarchate have established over the once vibrant and solidly Orthodox Church of Greece is a cause for mourning. They have delivered the most vibrant and prosperous Church in Hellenism to the State Department as can be seen by the fact that American officials have been giving orders to Greek bishops. Where are real bishops like the great Archbishop Christodoulos?

Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Elpidophoros have betrayed Greek Orthodoxy. They have entered into a nefarious alliance to harm Orthodox Russia and there will be a price to pay. They have betrayed the spiritual heritage of Constantinople (which is actually being upheld by the Russians who inherited it) and are becoming complicit with American warmongering.

The Patriarch and the Archbishop have attempted to justify their war on the Russian Church by hiding behind the Greek flag. The Archbishop however demonstrated how much he supports Hellenism when he attended that ceremony at the Turkish mission in New York which was attended by the Turkish President who converted Hagia Sophia into a Mosque and by the leader of the Turkish occupation in Cyprus.

Hysterical voices in both political parties are looking to exacerbate tensions with Orthodox Russia. With Donald Trump gone from the White House the pro war factions in Washington and the think tanks are taking the initiative to start yet another war against Orthodox Russia. The decision of Patriarch and Archbishop to align themselves with these elements is both immoral and contravenes the traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church.

One thousand years ago, the Emperor of Constantinople encountered the Knights of the First Crusade. The Crusaders talked about “holy war” to kill Muslims. The Emperor told the Crusaders that the Christians of the East reject the concept of “holy war” and fight only in defense of their borders and their security.

The Crusaders did not understand this because they were religious fanatics. The neoconservatives and neo liberals do not exploit Christianity as the Crusaders did. Instead, they justify their modern Crusades under the guise of “democracy”. Originally, it was Emperor Alexios Comnenus of Constantinople who asked for western mercenaries to counter the Seljuk Turks who had conquered Anatolian territory in 1071. When the Emperor realized that an army of lunatics showed up at the gates of Constantinople, he came to regret his decision.

His successors also came to regret his decision as new Crusades were launched. In 1204, the Fourth Crusade attacked Constantinople and destroyed its Churches and Monasteries while massacring the population. The Patriarchate and Archdiocese are depending on Washington to save the Patriarchate.

That unwise decision has been costly for Orthodoxy and especially for the following Churches. For the canonical Ukrainian Church which is being persecuted by the Ukrainian authorities. Churches are being seized by the schismatics that Patriarch Bartholomew supports and priests and faithful are being beaten. The Greek Churches have also become casualties (as noted above) as the Church of Greece’s autocephaly has been undermined and the Church of Cyprus has become divided because of Patriarch Bartholomew’s actions.

The reputation of the Holy Mountain of Athos has been damaged because a handful of Abbots have placed their loyalty to the Patriarch above Orthodoxy. It is well known that American officials have interfered with the Monks to press them to go along with Patriarch Bartholomew’s orders. The remaining Orthodox Churches remain cautious regarding the break in communion between Constantinople and the Russian Church. The Orthodox Church is in a a state of semi paralysis.

As the Greeks in the Byzantine Empire came to bitterly regret aligning with the Crusaders, modern Greeks will come to regret the decisions of Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, and the Archbishop of Athens to align the Greek Churches with the modern Crusaders of Washington who like their predecessors one thousand years ago have an insatiable lust for unending wars.

As the city of Constantinople was destroyed by the Fourth Crusade, the Church of Constantinople today is being gradually destroyed by the policies imposed on it by the new Crusaders. Those who happen to love the Church and City of Constantinople and its glorious heritage reject the new Crusades against Holy Russia and its Great Church.

Russophobia In The Post Trump Era

With Donald Trump out of the way, the neoconservatives have wasted no time in filling the vacuum in the Republican Party. Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi is without question one of the most ignorant and poorly informed individuals holding elected office. The Democrats are intellectually depraved with their insane ideas about defunding the Police but this Republican is trying to outdo the Democrats by expressing ideas that are even more catastrophic.

The Einstein of Mississippi believes the United States should consider going to war with Russia over Ukraine. What kind of poorly informed person is it that can lightly suggest something like that? Russia is a nuclear country and is the country that crushed Napolean and Hitler.

The Republicans have their own lunatics and Roger Wicker is one of them. What made Donald Trump a good candidate and President was the fact he was not a fanatic or a believer in interventionism abroad. Trump understood America should not be trying to impose itself on other countries and understood the horror that resulted from the wars and interventions in Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

Trump respected the Russians and on that issue alone demonstrated a superior intellect to conventional politicians in both parties. Ukraine has a complex history and American neoconservatives and liberals do not understand the religious and cultural issues regarding Ukraine. In addition, neoconservative fanatics such as Victoria Nuland are back advocating for a strong anti Russian policy.

American Democracy is dead and has been for decades. Donald Trump temporarily revived Democracy for four years but now the war mongering pseudo intellectuals and think tanks have resurfaced. Victoria Nuland and Geoffrey Pyatt (Ambassador to Ukraine in 2014) supported the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s government in 2014 which forced the Russians to intervene to block Ukraine from being used as a base by NATO to attack Russia in the future.

The question of admitting Ukraine into NATO should have been permanently settled then. But fanatics like Nuland and many others who have never been elected to public office and are not accountable to anyone are proceeding to instigate wars under the noses of the members of Congress and the intellectually challenged members of what passes for media in America today. The think tanks are far more dangerous than the CIA ever was during the period of the Cold War.

Attacks on Joe Biden are beginning. National Review is hysterically accusing Biden of supporting autonomy for Eastern Ukraine. If this is true (and I have doubts about that) then Biden should be praised not criticized. American gestures that contribute to the easing of tensions with Russia are productive and correct.

It appears that the historically illiterate war mongers in both parties are going to bring Hitler back. Hitler has been sighted over three decades in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Some of us thought he committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin in 1945. Every time a Republican or a Democrat wants to start a war they refer to a particular leader as the new Hitler.

The Hitler comparison has always been stupid and anyone who really believes that Slobodan Milosovic, Saddam Hussein, or Muammar Khadafi ranked with Hitler is devoid of intelligence. Such comparisons minimize the horrors of the Holocaust and the genuine evil that Hitler and his movement genuinely represented. Hitler caused the deaths of over fifty million people during a six year period, a record of mass murder that other dictators are no where close in matching (maybe Stalin and Mao).

It was Hillary Clinton who compared Vladimir Putin to Hitler in 2014. For war mongering opportunists Hitler is good propaganda. For those who have studied history and rely on knowledge and not propaganda, it is fairly obvious that Hitler’s murderous reign is being diminished.

Even worse. Vladimir Putin is the leader of a country that lost over twenty million lives to the racist regime in Berlin that considered Slavs to be subhuman. Hitler’s war on Russia was a barbaric war aimed at subjugating the Russians and seizing their land and oil. Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad in 1952. During the war, the Nazi death machine laid siege to that city and brought about the starvation of over one million Russians.

Vladimir Putin’s older brother died during the siege. Putin’s Uncles died in defense of Leningrad. Only those who are stupid and are knowledgeable in political slogans do not recognize the danger of demonizing Russia. Now Senator Wicker joins the geniuses in the Democratic Party and calls for war on Russia.

It was the cretinous and vulgar barbarian Paul Begala (a Clinton administration official) who recommended that Donald Trump bomb Russia in 2017. These people are all psychopaths. The stupidity increases when considering that Nuland, Pyatt and the rest have been supporting Neo-Nazi militias in Ukraine that the Russians fought against.

Who supports Neo-Nazis? Those who support aggression against Russia. Among the Ukrainians who have found favor in Washington, the memory of Stephan Banderas the wartime Nazi collaborator is honored.

It would be nice if those who have political influence knew what they were talking about. It would be nicer if Congress proceeded to take control of the think tanks that have been running amok for far too long.

Ukraine Again

The United States withdrew from a twenty year war in Afghanistan that ended in disaster. While it is true that the manner in which the Biden administration withdrew was responsible for the disaster that unfolded, the fact is that Afghanistan was very problematic and unwinnable as can be seen by the recent publication of the “Afghanistan Papers” a book based heavily on documents from the Bush, Obama, and Trump administration. Now the United States wants to provoke tensions with Russia over Ukraine.

Russia should not invade Ukraine. Ukraine is entitled to its sovereignty and independence. At the same time, the Biden administration refuses to accept Russian demands that Ukraine not be admitted into NATO. In fairness to the Biden administration, NATO expansion at the expense of Russian national security began under the Clinton administration and continued under the Bush and Obama administrations. Neocons in the Republican Party remain as vociferous in their anti Russian sentiments as the Democrats.

NATO needs to give assurances that Ukraine will not be accepted as a member. Then the Russians could give assurances they will not invade. Ukraine borders Russia and considering the history of invasions directed at Russia from the Teutonic Knights to Hitler it is easy to see why the Russians will not accept Ukraine as a member of NATO.

The US lost in Afghanistan because it never understood the complex tribal and cultural factors that makes that country ungovernable. Ukraine is not as complex but it does have cultural and religious problems that western secularists and liberals do not understand. The Uniates are Eastern Rite Christians under the Papacy. Byzantine in their liturgy and Roman Catholic in their ecclesiology and dogmas they are a complicating factor in relations between the Orthodox and the Papacy.

Ukraine is the border between Orthodoxy and western Christianity. It is a very delicate situation fraught with tensions and violence. Into the mix is the Church situation into which Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople unwisely ventured at the request of Washington. The political complexities of Ukraine have led to the schism that threatens Orthodox unity.

The Russians should recognize that the Church question will become further complicated by a Russian invasion. The canonical and legitimate Ukrainian Orthodox Church is under the omophorion of Moscow. The Patriarch of Moscow is the legitimate spiritual leader of Ukraine and everything that has transpired in the ecclesiastical affairs of Ukraine over the past three years constitutes an aggression against the Moscow Patriarchate’s rightful authority.

A conflict in Ukraine will aggravate the Church problems and will serve to make a resolution more difficult. A resolution necessitates that the Ukrainian Church is an autonomous and inseparable part of the Russian Church. A Russian intervention will play to the political interests of those Ukrainian politicians that started the Church crisis.

The Biden administration will look particularly bad after the pathetic way in which the Afghanistan war was ended if it ends up in a conflict with Russia. President Biden insisted that Afghanistan was unwinnable. Biden was right about that but wrong in the manner in which he chose to withdraw American forces.

Provoking the Russians will be an even worse decision than the Bush administrations decision to invade Iraq. Both sides need to back down and respect Ukrainian sovereignty. Washington should demand that NATO abandon its desire to grant Ukraine membership and the Russians should renounce any plans to invade Ukraine.

Robert Dole Rest In Peace

Former Senator (R-Kansas) Robert Dole passed away at the age of ninety six. I voted for him in the 1996 Presidential election. I also wrote two published letters to the now defunct Hellenic Chronicle (Boston) and Greek American (New York) pointing out why Dole would have been good for Greece and Cyprus.

Among the reasons for supporting Dole were the times he sponsored Resolutions in the Senate recognizing the Armenian Genocide. During the Second World War, an Armenian Doctor saved the life of the future Senator. Dole became close to the Armenian community which raised money for his campaign in 1996.

The Dole campaign at the time made a real effort to win over the Greeks on the matters of the Patriarchate and Cyprus. The Greeks voted for the Democrats. This was the year incidentally in which the Clinton administration forced Greece to capitulate when Turkey claimed the Islet of Imia. In August of that year, the Turks murdered four Greek Cypriots within a one month period.

The Clinton administration did nothing. It is possible that if Dole had won the US would have still been pro Turkish. But we did know that after one term in office Clinton had done nothing for Greece and Cyprus.

The thing about Dole that was impressive was the personal connection he had to the Armenians which was described in an article in the Boston Globe. If there had ever been a Presidential Candidate who might have changed policies toward Turkey, it might have been Dole.

Furthermore, Dole had integrity. As we were later to discover the incumbent Democrat had no class or integrity.

The Papal Visit To Greece

Pope Francis is on visit to Greece after having visited Cyprus. In Athens, a Greek priest was arrested after yelling “you are a heretic”. Such displays of hysteria do not serve the Orthodox Church or the interests of Greece. One does not have to be an ecumenist to suggest that people of different faiths should coexist peacefully.

I am not an ecumenist and I believe the dogmatic differences between Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism cannot be bridged. At the same time it is possible to maintain civil relations and not be in a state of permanent spiritual war. In 2001, Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens accepted the apology of the visiting Pope John Paul II who expressed sorrow for the crimes of the Fourth Crusade that destroyed Constantinople in 1204.

The Orthodox world has serious grievances with the Roman Catholic Church. Some of these are still ongoing as with the aggressive activities of the Uniates in Ukraine. The way to deal with these issues is in a Christian manner through legitimate criticism and engagement.

One can reject any compromises of Orthodox faith while adopting a polite attitude to people of different faiths. In 2001, Greek Orthodox demonstrators denounced Pope John Paul II as a “two horned devil” and “antiChrist”. Such language emanates from fanatical attitudes similar to those that inspired the Crusades.

The Greek Church should be respectful to the Pope on his visit. Unfortunately, there are signs Archbishop Ieronymos is mishandling the visit. The Archbishop said the Roman Catholic Church did not support the Greek War of Independence. This is not really relevant since Greek Independence was achieved.

The Archbishop should have politely raised the issue of Roman Catholic (through Italy and France) support for Kemal’s armies in Asia Minor which deprived Greece of Constantinople and Smyrna. He could also have raised the issue of the Croatian Catholic genocide of Orthodox Christian Serbs during the Second World War.

These issues can be raised politely and diplomatically without needless hysteria. On the matter of the “union” between east and west, the Archbishop should politely state that Orthodoxy considers itself to possess the fullness of truth and no compromise is possible. Peaceful relations can be maintained and Orthodox and Roman Catholics can work together on matters of common concern.

For example, Orthodox Russia and Roman Catholic Poland and Hungary are fiercely resisting the western effort to impose LGBT ideology down their throats. In that common struggle, Orthodox and Roman Catholics have much in common and should fight together.

NATO Hypocrisy

Tensions are rising once again between NATO and Russia over Ukraine. Russia is threatening to invade Ukraine. However, Moscow is asking that NATO agree that Ukraine should not join the alliance.

NATO is dismissing the very idea that Ukraine should not become a member. NATO expansionism is a threat to Russia and the war of 2014 would not have occurred had not NATO (America specifically) overthrown the Ukrainian government and replaced it with an anti Russian one. An agreement by NATO not to include Ukraine as a member might go a long way toward establishing peace with Russia.

NATO wants to commit itself to Ukraine. Rather ironic that NATO refuses to support Greece against fellow NATO member Turkey. Turkey has been claiming Greece territory and threatening Greece with war. NATO has refused to intervene in any way.

NATO member Turkey invaded non aligned Cyprus in 1974 and continues to occupy Cypriot territory where Greek Cypriots were ethnically cleansed. NATO is not a defense alliance and its bombing of Serbia in 1999 fully affirms this. NATO is instigating tensions with Russia by seeking to make Ukraine a member.

The Biden administration would do well to improve relations with Russia and to ease tensions. Biden could make the US a leader by working to prevent further NATO expansion at the expense of Russia. With covid still a major problem the people of the world do not need either a cold war or a hot war with Russia.

The top priority for all should be the end of covid and a restoration of normal life, not war and conflict.
