The European Union has refused to impose sanctions on Turkey as demanded by the Government of Cyprus. The Europeans have imposed sanction on Byelorussia which can be easily interpreted as an indirect attack on Russia since that country is a Russian ally. Turkish aggression against Cyprus and Greece has won a reprieve and most likely because of the Germans who seek to appease Turkish dictator Erdogan.
Turkey is engaging in acts of aggression against Greek and Cypriot territorial rights in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. The refusal of the European Union to impose sanctions on Turkey proves that the Hellenic world cannot put its trust in western alliances. Greece and Cyprus can and should work with individual members such as France and Italy who have been supportive, but should reject the European Union as a whole.
The European Union imposed sanctions on Byelorussia although that country is not a member of the European Union and so its internal affairs are a domestic matter. Cyprus and Greece are both members of the European Union and have received no support although they are being menaced by a jihadist state that is not a member of the European Union. The pressure is on Greece and Cyprus to surrender at it has been so many times in history.

I have to disagree with you on this one, Ted. Cyprus originally vetoed sanctions on Belarus because the same standard was not being used against Turkey. Cyprus then-apparently-backed off of that principled stand and let Turkey off with an ‘EU warning’. Sure, it would have been tough for small Cyprus to maintain it’s ethical stand when the EU powers were bound and determined to go after Belarus and ignore Turkey, but that’s what taking ethical stands is often all about. You have to shame northern Europe by pointing out their hypocrisy. I don’t know what was discussed in closed session and what agreements Cyprus (and Greece?) got out of Germany and others regarding Turkey, but if it wasn’t tangible actions they sold their interests out cheap. Turkey doesn’t respond to principled gestures, they look upon them as a sign of weakness. They only respond to strength. Cyprus had a chance to stand up to the fickle Germans and they waffled. I hope it doesn’t come back to bite them.
If Cyprus did indeed cave in this is disgraceful. Greece and Cyprus have not been alive in firmly standing up to the Turks for many decades. They have to go all the way. I am concerned that Germany is going to screw things up for Greece and Cyprus.
Merkel would sell Greek interests out at the drop of a hat, if it benefits Germany one iota. She has contempt for Greece and for all southern European states for that matter and barely conceals it with her statements and actions. I think the Germany people-for the most part-are smarter than her and recognize that Greece and Bulgaria are the only things standing between them and a TSUNAMI of economic refugees coming out of Turkey. Greece is holding the line but with little thanks coming out of Berlin. Merkel needs to be defeated at the polls, but unfortunately the opposition parties are all weak and divided in Germany at the current time. She has been a disaster not only to Germany but to all the EU.
